“I am so grateful and honored to be the recipient of the 2021 CAPEES/Nanova Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chinese American Professors in Environmental Engineering and Science (CAPEES),” Chen said. “I really value this award for its recognition of significant contribution to the community through outstanding research and services —these are standards I have been striving toward for my entire career through advancing sustainable engineering, promoting higher education, and helping others improve their lives.
“I am honored that the community has saw fit to recognize my work. I am also very grateful for all the opportunities I have had to work with my outstanding colleagues, students, and Institutional leaders at Georgia Tech.”
Chen, who joined the Georgia Tech faculty in 2009, is a professor in environmental engineering focusing on the potential environmental applications and implications of nanotechnology, along with urban sustainability. He has served as the principal or co-principal investigator on grants totaling about $10 million and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers.

Xie is the Carlton S. Wilder Assistant Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering where he specializes in the applications of innovative materials for sustainable and reliable water and energy. He has worked on many projects related to water treatment and reuse, microbial detection and quantification, energy and resource recovery and energy storage. Xie has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles with more than 6,000 citations.
“It is my great honor to receive the CAPEES/Nanova Young Investigator Award from the Chinese-American Professors in Environmental Engineering and Science (CAPEES) this year,” Xie said. “I have been in this community since I was a Ph.D. student 10 years ago. CAPEES has provided tremendous support on my career development. I appreciate the recognition by the CAPEES community on my achievements in the past few years at Georgia Tech. I am also very grateful to have those great students working in my group and the resources provided by the School that make these achievements possible.”
