CEE alumnus Philip Breedlove nominated to NATO post

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering salutes President Obama’s choice to head up NATO Forces in Europe: General Philip Breedlove.

A 1977 CEE alumnus, Breedlove currently serves as the Commander of US Air Forces in Europe and Africa. If approved by the US Senate, his new assignment as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe will make him the first Air Force general to lead US and NATO forces in more than a decade. He would replace Admiral James Stravridis who is scheduled to retire this summer.

The announcement of Breedlove’s nomination had been rumored for a few months, but the Air Force General was genuinely humbled by Thursday’s announcement. According to a statement he issued to Stars & Stripes:

“If confirmed, I’ll do everything in my power to live up to the example set by Admiral Jim Stavridis and the other great officers who have led the men and women of this command so well throughout its remarkable history.”
