Dr. Peter S. Parsonson, an emeritus CEE faculty member, received the 2013 Wilbur S. Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award at the Institute of Transportation Engineers's (ITE) Annual Meeting in Boston last month.
Parsonson's active career at Georgia Tech began in 1970 and extended nearly three decades. He also has taught at the University of South Carolina and North Carolina State University.
Throughout his teaching career, Parsonson has grounded his coursework in real-world engineering practice - exposing his students to problems they would have to solve as working engineers. While serving as the Georgia Tech student liaison with the Georgia Section, he engaged students in section activities and urged them to submit technical papers and scholarship applications.
The ITE lauded Parsonson for devoting his career to inspiring students and promoting the profession through his support of ITE. Many of his students have become successful leaders and have worked on projects to develop innovative solutions.
