Dr. Phil Roberts, left and former CEE Chair (and CoE Dean ) Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau, far right, had a chance to catch up during a recent conference in Saudi Arabia |
Dr. Phil Roberts was the invited keynote speaker last month at "Desalination Brine and Wastewater Outfalls: Coastal Environmental Impacts in the Gulf Collaboration Region," a workshop held at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia.
Roberts' presentation reviewed some of the main environmental issues for ocean outfalls, including biochemical oxygen demand, toxics, bacteria, and environmental regulations.
"For brine discharges, the main environmental impact is salinity, which must be reduced to safe levels to protect marine organisms," he said. "It can be done in a number of ways."
While in Saudi Arabia, Roberts had occasion to visit wth an old friend of CEE: Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau. Now the president of KAUST, Chameau is well-known at Georgia Tech as the the former chair of CEE and former dean of the College of Engineering.
