CEE welcomes new faculty member Joe Brown

The School is pleased to announce the arrival of incoming Assistant Professor Joe Brown, Ph.D., P.E.

Brown served most recently as a lecturer in the Department of Disease Control, Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2010 – 2013). He was previously an assistant professor at the University of Alabama.

Brown earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and Engineering in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill (2007); an M.Phil. in Environment and Development, University of Cambridge-United Kingdom (2003), where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar; and B.S. Civil and Environmental Engineering, The University of Alabama (2001).

Brown’s research and teaching interests are at the intersection of environmental engineering and public health, including water and sanitation infrastructure sustainability, detection methods for pathogens and pathogen indicators in the environment, drinking water treatment technology characterization and innovation, and human health effects of exposure to waterborne pathogens.

His work currently spans four continents including active research projects in Cambodia, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Pakistan, India, the United Kingdom, and the southeastern United States. He serves as Principle Investigator on a newly-awarded $2 million U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) project to study health impacts of urban sanitation expansion in Mozambique, one of several large sanitation trials now underway in the developing world. Like much of Brown’s work, the study combines applied environmental microbiology, infrastructure, and epidemiology.

His numerous awards include the International Water Association’s Global Project Innovation Award (2008), which he received for his Ph.D. work on water treatment in Cambodia, and a National Institutes of Health award for new investigators (2010).  In 2012 he was named as a Fellow of the UNC Global Research Institute.

Please join us in welcoming Professor Brown to the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering!
