A chunk of concrete dropped off a wall into traffic Jan. 30 in the Yerba Buena Island tunnel that’s part of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Now the California Department of Transportation is investigating whether there’s more corrosion in the tunnel that could lead to other problems.
Professor Emeritus Larry Kahn examined a photo of the damage for the San Francisco Chronicle. He said he’d be looking at the whole structure to make sure no other areas are about to fail in a similar way.
“This is probably due to long-term deterioration,” Kahn told the Chronicle. “Corrosion is very, very slow, but it can be extremely dangerous.”
