The Georgia Tech Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning recently announced that Dr. Susan E. Burns has been chosen to receive the 2012 Class of 1934 Course Survey Teaching Effectiveness Award.
A former Georgia Tech undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral student, Burns is a professor and group coordinator for the Geosystems Engineering Group within the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
The award is given in the fall and spring semesters to a faculty member with exception
al response rates and scores on the Course-Instructor Opinion Survey (CIOS), an instrument which is distributed to students at the conclusion of semester classes. Taking the class size into account, evaluators for this award also look for a robust response rate (85 percent or better) and a high rating on instructor effectiveness.
“We are proud of Dr. Burns’ dedication to classroom teaching, where so many students first discover their passion for civil and environmental engineering,” said Karen and John Huff Chair Dr. Reginald DesRoches. “She plays an important role in the future of our work.”
Burns will receive a small financial reward for this honor as well as recognition during the Institute’s Celebrating Teaching Day, to be held in March.
