The Georgia Tech Chapter of the Association of Environmental Engineers and Scientists (AEES) is inviting the public to attend “Water Wars in the Southeast,” a panel discussion focusing the decades-long dispute over water rights to the Chattahoochee River.
The November 20 event will be held at the Ford Environmental Science and Technology Building (ES&T) in room L1-205 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will follow.
Invited panelists include Billy Turner, the chairman of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Stakeholders Governing Board, Gil Rogers, an attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center, and Lewis Jones, counsel for King & Spaldingʼs Tort & Environmental Litigation Practice Group.
According to GT-AEES president Malin Dartnell, the intent of the panel is to spark more fact-based contributions to the often emotional debate over water rights to river. Three states – Alabama, Florida, and Georgia – have been impacted, environmentally and economically, by efforts to manage the Chattahoochee’s flow and usage.
“We were intrigued by the environmental issues raised by the debate over water rights to the Chattahoochee River,” she said. “There are three states involved, but dozens of issues at stake.”
Dartnell says the ASEE purposely chose panelists who could represent diverse viewpoints on the issue.
“Every year, ASEE hosts a debate on an environmental issue that has the potential to be controversial,” she said. “Last year, we hosted a discussion of energy usage in the United States which was very exciting. This year promises to be more so.”
