Karen and John Huff School Chair and Professor Reginald DesRoches has been appointed to the National Academies Roundtable on Risk, Resilience, and Extreme Events (referred to as the Resilience Roundtable).
The mission of the Resilience Roundtable is to convene experts from the academic, public, and private sectors to design or catalyze activities that build resilience to extreme events. These activities could be exercised by community, regional, national, or international partners. The Roundtable will provide the venue for current research, science, and evidence-based foundations to inform whole community strategies for building resilience. Roundtable activities will also help decision makers build approaches for (1) deciding how and where to invest resources to mitigate risk and build resilience in ways that allow them to (2) explain or defend those investment decisions.
The Resilience Roundtable will engage decision makers at the community and local levels and use four mechanisms in its work: improving risk communication; identifying means to measure community resilience; developing mechanisms to share data and information related to hazards, disasters, risk, and resilience; and developing or strengthening partnerships and coalitions within and among communities to build resilience.
The roundtable is co-Chaired by the President of the UPS Foundation, Eduardo Martinez, and Professor Granger Morgan, Head of the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon. Other notable Atlantans on the roundtable include Erroll B. Davis, Superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools and former Chancellor of the University System of Georgia.
