Lauren Dermody, a student of CEEatGT's Joint BS/MS Program, is the 2014 recipient of the Helen Grenga Outstanding Engineer Award.
This award was created to celebrate the accomplishments of women in engineering, and is presented to a woman engineering student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service in her field and in the Georgia Tech community. The honor is named after Helen Grenga, the first female tenured engineering professor at Georgia Tech in the School of Metallurgy, now known as the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
Dermody received the award at Georgia Tech's recent Women in Engineering Awards Banquet, where CEEatGT Associate Chair of Undergraduate Programs and Professor Susan E. Burns spoke on Dermody's endeavors within our School and the Georgia Tech community as a whole:
During her time at Georgia Tech, Lauren has been an active and enthusiastic member of the Georgia Tech community. Lauren is a most deserving recipient of the Helen Grenga award because, not only is she an outstanding scholar and enthusiastic leader, she has also dedicated herself to serving the community while she has been here at Tech.
Lauren is completing her Civil Engineering degree, and is set to graduate in the summer semester. She is a recipient of the Boeing scholarship, the Fluor scholarship, and is a member of both Tau Beta Pi and Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society.
Lauren has maintained high academic performance in addition to completing multiple internships in Construction Engineering, and Project Management. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Society of Women Engineers. Most notably, Lauren has served as an Ambassador for the Women in Engineering Program, and as a Project Vision Team Leader for Habitat for Humanity. Christine Valle, Director of the Women in Engineering Program, notes “Lauren is a strong supporter of women in engineering, very involved in both outreach and mentoring programs.”
While Lauren’s accomplishments are remarkable, what is most exceptional about her is her ability to accomplish so much with such grace and enthusiasm. She is dedicated, committed, enthusiastic, and she has been an exceptional member of the GT community. She is a most deserving recipient of the Helen Grenga Outstanding Engineer award.
