The Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) program has selected two CEE doctoral candidates for scholarships this year: Josephine Bates and Elizabeth Nadelman.

Bates is entering her second year of Ph.D. work focused on air quality and its impacts on human health. She studies reactive oxygen species and how they contribute to the adverse health effects of particulate matter in the air. Her model for these species generates data that helps researchers at Emory University in their health studies.
This is the second ARCS award for Nadelman, a fourth-year doctoral student. She’s studying techniques to make concrete mixtures that are highly durable while also being highly sustainable. Her research focuses on concretes made with “green” limestone cements.
The ARCS Scholars Award recognizes students who are poised to make significant contributions to science and technology around the world. The selection committee also chooses winners based on their demonstrated record of achievement.
